Corporate Operations and Engineering programme

Location: London and various UK power stations

Duration: 2 years (starting September 2012)

Salary: £26,500 per annum

Entry requirements: 2:2 Bachelors degree or higher
Mechanical Engineering degree

The programme

From inception to de-commissioning the Operations and Engineering team’s activity covers all aspects of procuring, owning and operating power plants. They are responsible for engineering, operations and maintenance globally and support new projects, acquisitions and mergers.

We aim to provide graduates with a broad exposure to our business activities, so as well as spending time on our UK based power stations learning about engineering from the ground upwards, graduates on this stream of the programme also spend some of their two years based at the Corporate head office in London.

Initially graduates are sent on a training course which includes basic craft skills, an introduction to power stations and health & safety. This initial training is complemented throughout the programme with site specific inductions and technical training alongside leadership and personal development.

We also support our graduate engineers to work towards chartered engineering status with relevant professional bodies (including the IET and the IMechE) as we are committed to developing our engineers to the highest standards.

Typical placements

There may be the opportunity to work on the following types of projects:

  • Detailed comparison of operating practices across a broad fleet, and development of a "best practice model" for deployment at power stations. This could be in areas of efficiency monitoring, application of new technologies, or other areas which can improve profitability
  • Establishment of systems that support improved profitability of plants, such as methods for benchmarking, establishment of spares inventories databases, or establishment of networks that allow better communication of plant experiences across the fleet

Our UK assets that a graduate may spend time at are Rugeley Power station (coal fired), Deeside and Shotton (Gas), Saltend (Gas). The graduate will also spend part of their programme based in the Corporate team in the London head office.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for applicants with a background in engineering, who are committed, motivated and driven to learn more about engineering within a power generation environment.
